EXISTING - NEWTOWNARDS TOWN CENTRE

• Long-term decline and dereliction of the town centre and
under-exploitation of the tourism potential.

• Elderly buildings incapable of meeting modern retailing demands.

• Debilitating town centre tarffic congestion - urgent need for new Ring Road.

PROPOSED - CASTLE BAWN SHOPPING CENTRE

• Retail-led regeneration of the town centre that will enhance Newtownards's tourist potential - to include the restoration of the Castle Bawn Scheduled Monument and upgrading of the Court Street townscape to provide a fitting setting for the Dominican Priory.

• Retail extension to the existing shopping provision that will enable high street multiples to locate in the town centre as opposed to the existing out-of-town centre.

• New ring road constructed that will decongest Court Street and the town centre, allowing an improved environment and safer pedestrian linkages.

BAWN WALL PROPOSALS

As part of the new shopping centre proposals, the existing Castle Bawn Scheduled Monument will be transformed from:

• A monument in an advanced state of decay.

• a monument that is inaccessible to the public and concealed from view.

to:

• Reversing decline

• Returning access to historic Bawn Balls






 

 

• A monument that is fully restored.

• A monument that is fully accessible to the Public.

• A monument that will have a new Interpretative Centre along the length its nothern wall - "The Museum of the Wall" that will narrate the history of the development of Newtownards, celebrating the Town's 400th Anniversary."
